Move 2: Play the Lute

The Second Movie - Play the Lute

Following the foundational movement of Commencement, the next step in the Wu Style Short Form is Play the Lute, a move that challenges your balance and control. This move is centered around a single-leg kwa squat, demanding a shift of your weight and attention.

The Breakdown of the Movement

The movement begins with a deep transfer of weight as you go into a kwa squat. You will shift your weight fully into your right leg, allowing your left leg to become unweighted. As you do this, your arms will rise in front of you, just as they did in Commencement. However, this time they will come up at a 45-degree angle.

Next, stretch your arms out at this angle to 70%. It's crucial to keep both your heels on the ground during this phase to maintain a stable connection to the earth.

Next, you will begin to "hug a tree." Your arms will come in and around as if embracing a large object, and you should feel the connection through your shoulder blades and back. This isn't just an arm movement; it's a full-body action. It's important not to collapse your arms or let your elbows drop during this part.

As you perform this wrapping motion, your left heel will begin to lift, a subtle preparation for the next step. Once your heel is lifted, you will step forward with your left foot, placing the heel down to take your "left pulse." The goal is to have all of your body's weight firmly on your right leg as you take this step, demonstrating a sense of effortless balance and control.
