Move 8: Single Whip

Mastering the Transition: Wu Style Single Whip

Single Whip is one of the most iconic and essential postures in Tai Chi, and the Wu Style form brings a specific focus to smooth rotation and internal connection. This section of your practice is all about transferring power and maintaining integrity from your core to your fingertips.

The Dynamics of Single Whip

The movement begins from the conclusion of "An," requiring a deep, controlled transition:

1. Initiating the Turn: The body rotates into the weighted right leg, sinking deeply as you fold into the kwa (the hip crease or groin). This grounding is critical.

2. Hand Transformation: Simultaneously, the hands assume their new forms. The right hand gathers and makes the distinct "beak" shape, while the left hand flips over, preparing for the outward motion. The whole body moves as one unit—the connection between the hands and the waist must be maintained throughout this initial rotation.

3. Whip and Step: As you begin to stretch out of that rotation, the left hand executes a fluid "whip" action. This extension coordinates perfectly with the left foot stepping out to a 45^\circ angle, setting the foundation for the classic Single Whip shape. The feet, therefore, form a precise V-shape.

4. Final Shift and Chop: The energy then moves forward as you shift your weight fully into the left leg. The left hand completes the action with a controlled chop (using the side of the hand).

5. Refined Conclusion: The posture culminates in returning to an evenly weighted stance. In this final position, the body is fully aligned: the elbows are neatly aligned with the knees, the right hand retains its beak, and the left palm is angled purposefully toward the ground, demonstrating a perfect balance of openness and stability.

Single Whip is a study in circular power, requiring sensitivity to maintain the connection of the hands while the torso rotates and the weight shifts.
